The Housing (Wales) Act 2014 was introduced to tackle the problems of housing shortages in Wales. One of the measures in the Act is the discretion for Local Authorities to levy up to 100% of the standard rate of Council Tax on long-term empty home in their areas. The Welsh Ministers have decided that Local Authorities will have the discretion to charge the Council Tax Premium from 1st April 2017
This will enable Local Authorities to take their local needs and circumstances into consideration before deciding whether or not to implement the premium and subsequently how it is applied.
